Human-animal interactions can have powerful effects on learning and therapy progress, but it is also important to consider the impact on the animals to ensure their well-being as well as providing humane models to child or adult clients or learners. Animal Assisted Play Therapy® involves a play-based multidisciplinary approach to this work. Drawing from mental health, allied health, and educational fields on the human side and from ethology, behaviorism, and comparative psychology on the animal side, AAPT’s central focus is on reciprocal relationships between humans and animals that augment the therapist’s or educator’s work.
