Family Therapy between Theory and Practice  

Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on enhancing communication and resolving challenges within families. Family therapy approaches view that individual problems and challenges arise from and are influenced by the dynamics and interaction with the family system.

About the workshop

This is an interactive workshop that will introduce the history and main concepts underlying family therapy with a special focus on theories and main approaches. The workshop is an introduction to a 2-year family therapy training. Stay with us!

By the end of the workshop, participants can be able to:

  1. Identify the history and evolution of family therapy
  2. Recognize the theoretical and therapeutic contexts affecting the emergence and development of family therapy.
  3. Discuss the challenges facing the psychotherapist in the practice of family therapy.
  4. Articulate some of the concepts used in family therapy.
  5. Distinguish classic and contemporary family therapy approaches
  6. Identify the concept of family matrix.
  7. Discuss the problem of family imaginary.
  8. Highlight new directions in family therapy and Family Evidence-Based Practice. (EBP)
  9. Demonstrate transgenerational transmission and identify the geno-sociogram

Trainers: 

Eva Fahlström (Sweden)Senior psychotherapist and psychodramatist offering international training and supervision in the field of psychotherapy, psychodrama, sociodrama, bibliodrama, and improvised theatre. Dr. Eva is a founding member of the Federation of European Psychodrama Training Organizations (FEPTO) and a member of the Board of directors of the International Association for Group Psychotherapy and Group Processes (IAGP). She WAS the Chair of IAGP Trauma and Disaster Intervention Team (TDIT). In 2010, she was awarded “Life Time Achievement” by FEPTO.

Eva Fahlström Borg is an international trainer and supervisor. She has more than 50 years of experience of working with families – both as an educator and and as a familypsychotherapist. She is a Diploma Montessori Director, Psychodrama trainer and a licenced teacher and trainer of psychotherapy (Umeå University, Sweden) specializing in Systemic Family Therapy.

Eva also works and trains Family Decision Making and Conflict Transformations using Restorative Processes and Restorative Justice as a base.

Mona Rakhawy (Egypt)

Professor of psychiatry at Cairo University. She is an international trainer in group psychotherapy and group processes, and an adjunct faculty at the American University in Cairo. She is founder and the president of Rakhawy Institute for Training and Research (RITR), founder and vice-president of the Arab Association for Group Therapy and Group Work (AAGTW), founder and former president of the Egyptian Association for Group Psychotherapy and Group Processes (EAGT). She is co-chair  of the Education Committee of the International Association for Group Psychotherapy and Group Processes (IAGP), and chair of the Evolutionary Psychiatry Section of the Arab Federation of Psychiatrists (AFP). Mona Rakhawy was one of the first who have applied and conducted workshops in family therapy in Egypt.

Domenico Agresta

Clinical psychologist, psychotherapist, group-analyst and psycho-oncologist. He is the President of the Centre for the Study of Clinical Psychology and Psychosomatic Medicine (CSPP). He works with family as consultant with schools and institutions for psychological assessments. Most of his work in family is in psychosomatic area and borderline adolescents. He created workshops and meetings with Public schools and families to support educational programs. He is GASI full member. Board Member of The Italian Society of Psychosomatic Medicine. Director of Training at School of psychotherapy in Parma and Pescara (IPAAE) in group-analysis and analytic Family therapy. He lives and work in Pescara (Italy).

Doaa Elhariry, PHD. )Egypt)

A Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at Zagazig University, and a Certified Functional Family Therapy (FFT) therapist, trainer and supervisor, by the official FFT Certified Training Institution FFT LLC in the USA. She has 11 years’ experience working with children, adolescents and their families. In addition to participation in several FFT workshops as a representative in Arab and European countries including Egypt, Lebanon, Sweden, and the UK.
