Description:
Psychodrama with children in groups
Playing „as if…“ the child from early on imitates and explores the world. By playing „as if…“ it is able to experience different roles and grows within. With this „Symbol play“ the child mentalizes structures and develops personality. By playing together on a symbolic level the children exchange their mentalized structures and ideas and co-create new solutions.
When children play together their fantasies, there is a constant oscillation between play and negotiation. Taking a role usually implies giving a role to the other. They have to co-create the script of the play.
In psychodrama with children, we explore their fantasies and put these from the inner stage on the outer stage and work with them in the play. We interpret the fantasies of the child as possible solutions and an inner creative force for empowerment and reduction of suffering. The child usually chooses roles, which are powerful, but are also reflecting the needs, the child has. To bring these “fantasies of greatness” on the stage is playful method to support healing and growth. Every child can choose its own role!
Taking the role, given by the child, the psychodramatist can interact therapeutically and pedagogically on the symbol level. The psychodramatist can double and mirror the child, out of the given role.
